Let’s be honest: life has a hilarious, albeit slightly cruel, way of tripping us up right when we think we’re sprinting. One minute you’re Olympic-level multitasking, and the next, life has stuck a metaphorical broom handle in your bicycle spokes.​

When we fall, we usually do one of two things: we sit on the floor scolding ourselves for being clumsy, or we get up and ask, “What would I do differently next time?

“​The “Momma Bear” Paradox: Multitasking vs. Reality​

There’s a popular saying that “a job can’t be done properly if you’re focused on other tasks.” To that, I say: Have you ever met a mother? Watching a woman navigate a career, keep a tiny human alive, manage a household, and occasionally attempt to have a social life (which usually just means texting a friend “I’m tired” from the bathroom) is a masterclass in defying the laws of physics.

​While the “one task at a time” crowd has a point about focus, they often miss the magic of the Growth Mindset.​

Fixed vs. Growth: Which One Are You Wearing?​

The way we approach “doing things differently” usually comes down to our mindset:​

☆The Fixed Mindset: This is the “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” department. It’s comfortable, but it’s also where progress goes to die. People here say, “It’s done like this because we’ve always done it this way.” This is the recipe for stagnant behavior and a very boring life story.​

☆The Growth Mindset: This is the “Let’s see what happens if I pull this lever” department. It’s the belief that our intelligence and skills aren’t set in stone. If a process is slow, we change it. If we’re overwhelmed, we recalibrate.

​The Scenario: The “Letting Go” Moment​Imagine you’ve been carrying a heavy suitcase for ten miles. It’s full of “the way things are.” You’re exhausted, your arm hurts, and you’re missing the scenery because you’re staring at your blisters.

​The Fixed Mindset says: “Keep carrying it. You started with this bag, you finish with this bag.” The Growth Mindset says: “What if I leave the bag here? What if the value isn’t in the luggage, but in the journey I’m making without the weight?”​Sometimes, we have to let go of a specific method—or even a specific goal—to realize the value of our time and peace. Doing things differently isn’t about working harder or adding to your pay scale; it’s about freeing up the mental real estate to actually enjoy your life.​

The Recalibration

Whos to say the way we’ve gone about things is wrong? Maybe it wasn’t wrong for then, but it’s wrong for now.​

Life asking you to slow down or rest isn’t a penalty; it’s a strategic timeout. When we stop scolding ourselves for “mistakes,” we realize they weren’t errors at all—they were just data points telling us to try a different route.​
